The “Librone Magno”, a history of the families of Manduria, records the story of Pirro Varone’s legacy to this ancient town. Pirro Varone, the son of Giovan Battista Varone, was a Jewish nobleman who converted to Catholicism. By the end of his life in 1587 this magnanimous benefactor had donated his fortune to the Matrice Cathedral and other churches in the ancient town and had founded the Venerable ‘Monte di Pieta’, a house of charity that still exists today. His kind and generous spirit appears to have been inherited by the land which, today, confers agreeable qualities to its wines.
The town of Manduria is located in the Puglia Region, southeast of the Taranto Province. The area is best know for it´s excellent Primitivo wines and, its grapes are world renowned thanks to the organic characteristics that render them unique, just like the wines of Pirro Varone vineyards.
